Xiaomi é uma empresa chinesa conhecida por seus fogões de arroz, aspiradores de pó robô, purificadores de ar e smartphones. Agora, ela conseguiu o que a Apple, sua rival de longa data, não conseguiu: fazer um carro elétrico e levá-lo ao mercado.
E ela fez isso em três anos.
Para economizar tempo e custos, a empresa adotou práticas da Tesla e de outros fabricantes de automóveis, aproveitou seu próprio know-how em desenvolvimento de produtos e se conectou à cadeia de suprimentos de carros em rápida movimentação da China. Anos de aprimoramento de laptops, liquidificadores e câmeras para animais de estimação ajudaram a desenvolver recursos adaptados a uma base de consumidores volúvel, incluindo um painel removível de botões físicos que se encaixa magneticamente abaixo da tela central de 16,1 polegadas para aqueles que não gostam de controlar o volume ou o assento através da tela sensível ao toque.
Lei disse que a Xiaomi contratou cerca de 6.000 pessoas para trabalhar no projeto do carro. Alguns foram recrutados de fabricantes de carros estrangeiros como Porsche e BMW; outros foram transferidos de outros departamentos, disse Ma Yingbo, membro da equipe de marketing da Xiaomi. Entre os carros que a Xiaomi buscou inspiração estava o Model 3 da Tesla.
Para simplificar o desenvolvimento e reduzir custos, a Xiaomi adotou o processo de "gigacasting" da Tesla, que utiliza fundição de alumínio em grande escala e alta pressão para criar a estrutura do carro. O processo combina centenas de etapas de fabricação em uma única etapa, economizando em componentes, peso, custo e tempo.
